Neon Genesis Evangelion (新世紀エヴァンゲリオン Shin Seiki Evangelion) is a series produced by GAINAX which aired from October 1995 to March 1996. It is an extremely influential and popular anime, so much that new merchandise is still being created over ten years after its original release. It is also the cause of much controversy, due to its often cryptic, ambiguous nature which generally leaves the viewers to form their own conclusions about the meaning or outcome of various events. Another controversial aspect is the use of Judeo-Christian names and imagery, which the production team claimed was included "to look cool", but many fans believe this to be untrue.
It is an apocalyptic mecha series, featuring a mysterious organization known as Nerv and its efforts to defeat the assailants known only as the Angels. However, the series tends to focus upon the relationships and psychological states of the characters, and features many scenes specifically directed toward psychoanalysis of said characters.

Plot and Structure

The story is set in the year 2015 A.D., which is fifteen years after the Second Impact, a disastrous event which effectively halved the human population, caused massive global flooding, and even changed the climate in some areas. However, the human race slowly relearned to survive, and rebuilt what was left of itself. Suddenly, Angels begin attacking Tokyo-3, for reasons unknown. Conventional weapons have no effect on the Angels. Luckily for the human race, Nerv had been secretly developing the Evangelion Units, which seem to be the only thing capable of fending off the Angels. The Evangelion Units, however, require a pilot. The series focuses on Shinji Ikari, a fourteen year old boy who is chosen, unwillingly, to become one such pilot.

The 26 episodes of Neon Genesis Evangelion are divided into four "arcs". First is the " Prologue Arc", which includes episodes 01-07. This is followed by the " Action Arc", which spans from episode 08 to episode 13. Then comes what is known as the " Descent Arc", which encompasses episodes 14-19. Finally, the last seven episodes are collectively known as " The Bitter End".
