The protagonist is a young woman named Sophie who works in a hat shop, and has her life changed by a chance meeting with the mysterious wizard Howl. When the infamous Witch of the Waste places a curse on the girl, Sophie ends up living with Howl and trying to find her new place in a quickly changing world. Howl's Moving Castle (ハウルの動く城, Hauru no Ugoku Shiro) is a 2004 anime film written and produced by Hayao Miyazaki of Studio Ghibli. Sophie: a young girl who appears as an old woman thanks to a witch's curse. She works for Howl as the cleaning lady.
Howl: a powerful wizard who tries to avoid involvement in the on-going war of the kingdom.
Calcifer: the talking flame that holds the house together and gives Howl his power.
Witch of the Waste: an old witch whose quest to regain the admiration of the kingdom's ruler leads to her demise.
Markl: the young apprentice of the great wizard Howl.
