Introduction

Created by manga-ka Eiichiro Oda, One Piece began publication in mid-1997, and the anime based of the series began in late 1999. The origin of the story lays in Oda's one-shot manga, Romance Dawn.

It is a world where pirates rule the seas. Several bands of pirates were battling over the great hidden treasure, One Piece, which was left by the now legendary pirate captain, Gold Roger. There was a young boy who admired the pirates, named Monkey D. Luffy who, one day, mistakenly eats the devil`s fruit and gains the physical properties of rubber.

Ten years have passed since that incident. Luffy sets out to sail all alone. He sets out to become a great pirate captain and that`s when his great adventure begins. "I`m going to be the Pirate King! I`m going to get One Piece!".

Story

East Blue Arcs

The East Blue arcs consist of all events which occur during the time the Strawhat Pirates are in the sea known as East Blue. This implies all episodes starting from 1 until the Strawhats enter the Grand Line.

Captain Morgan Arc

The Captain Morgan arc is the shortest non-filler arc in the One Piece series. Occuring between episodes 1 and 3, it acts as an introductory arc for Monkey D. Luffy's character, and introduces Roronoa Zoro, Luffy's first crewmate. In addition, Coby and Helmeppo are introduced, though neither shows up again for a large part of the series.

The arc begins with the first episode, in which Luffy is pulled onboard a boat which gets attacked by a group of Pirates, by whom Coby has been enslaved. Luffy defeats Alvida, the Captain of the pirate crew, and sets sail with Coby. The two boys come to a small town with a Marine base, where Luffy gets the infamous pirate hunter Roronoa Zoro to join his crew. The two crew mates take down the tyrannical Captain Morgan, the head of the Marine base, and set sail. Coby remains behind and joins the Marines.

Captain Buggy Arc

The Captain Buggy arc consists of episodes 4 through 8, and serves as the first introductory arc for [Nami], who later becomes the Mugiwara Pirates' navigator. The audience is also given a brief history of Luffy, and how he gained the abilities of the Gomu Gomu no Mi.

Things start off with Luffy having his hat being blown away and taken by a bird while Zoro follows in the small boat. They arrive at a town where Captain Buggy, leader of the Buggy Pirates, has taken over. Nami is attempting to pilfer yet another pirate, and uses Luffy as a decoy to become close to Buggy. To earn Buggy's trust, Nami must fire a powerful cannon at Luffy, and while she hesitates, Zoro comes in to rescue them. During this rescue, Buggy shows that he has the abilities of the Bara Bara no Mi, which allows his body to separate; using this ability, he is able to stab Zoro with a knife. The group of three, after escaping, meets the mayor of the town, who is desperate to save his home. Luffy battles with Buggy, which gives Nami the opportunity to tie up Buggy's body parts which he had separated in order to attack, thus leaving him helpless. Buggy's first and second mates were defeated by Luffy and Zoro, respectively, before Buggy himself was defeated.

Nami joins Luffy's crew temporarily, at this point, as their navigator under the circumstances that she keeps the majority of the treasure the pirates are able to obtain.

Initially licensed by 4kids Entertainment in mid-2004, the series failed to take off in the United States, as often blamed of the large edits and cuts from the series in 4kids's attempt to market the show towards children and preteens. The results of such cuts were the first 143 episodes of the series being reduced down to 104. 4kids dropped their license in early 2007.

FUNimation has since picked up One Piece, and plans to handle the series with a new group of voice actors, use of the original opening and closing animation (meaning the demise of the "Gum Gum Rap" created by 4kids). FUNimation has not yet said anything definite in regards to re-dubbing episodes 1-143, but episode 144 is scheduled to air on Cartoon Network's Toonami block in August. The plans on marketing DVDs are said to be bi-yearly or tri-yearly box sets of 13 episodes a piece.
