The Queen Emeraldas is a 4 episode OVA made by Leiji Matsumoto to show what becomes of some of the characters after the Galaxy Express 999 movies. This particular OVA takes place approximately 5 years after we last see them in Galaxy Express. The first 2 episodes were produced by Studio OLM, and the second 2 were produced by Multi Access Company and released the following year.

Plot

The OVA starts out with a young boy named Hiroshi Umino who is escaping earth as a stow away aboard a freighter ship. He wants to prove to everyone that he is strong. En route to their final destination the ship is attacked by the Afressians. These are people who believe in a superior race and want to purge the galaxy of all other ethnicities. Before they could destroy the freighter a mysterious ship shows up and attacks them. There are whispers among the people that it is the Queen Emeraldas, the most powerful ship in the galaxy matched only by the Arcadia (Captain Harlocks ship also built for him by Tochirou). Emeraldas states her displeasure with the Afressians flying the pirate flag, as only 2 ships are allowed to fly the skull and cross bones, hers and the Arcadia. Emeraldas saves the freighter and they are able to continue on to their destination, a planet that bears a striking resemblence to the Old West.

Here Hiroshi gets a job in the roughest bar in town. Shortly after they land the Afressian captain Eldomain begins harassing the planet to find whatever or whoever attacked their ship. Emeraldas shows up and fights off the Afressians, eventually being taken to their leader Baraluuda. There is a long battle between Emeraldas and Baraluuda, in which Emeraldas comes out the victor and saves the day.
