History

After Birth Although Naruto's parents remain shrouded in mystery throughout the series (so far), there is a great amount of speculation toward that aspect of his character. The most prominent being that his father is Minato Namikaze (the fourth Hokage) and that his mother his mother is a simple villager from the Whirlpool Country. (can someone please get her name?) There is a great resemblance between Naruto and the portrait of the fourth Hokage in the office of the third Hokage. People also say that he took his mother's last name and that it fits because "Uzumaki" translated is "Whirlpool". Whatever the case, Naruto grew up as an orphan in the Village Hidden in the Leaves, not in the Whirlpool Country.

Soon after his birth, the Kyuubi (nine-tailed demon fox) attacked Konohagakure (Village Hidden in the Leaves). Many ninja died defending the village. Though the beast seemed unable to be killed, the fourth Hokage was able to seal it inside Naurto with a twin elephant... (if anyone wants to get what jireiya said before releasing orochimaru's 5 element/prong seal, go ahead, otherwise, this is the best we have) ... The seal was powerful enough that it required too much energy from the sealer (fourth Hokage) and killed him, though the seal was completed.

Childhood With the Fourth Hokage dead and no other Hokage chosen, the Third Hokage reassumed the role of Hokage. One of the first things he did with his title was make a law that no one was to talk about Naruto as the container for the demon. He later says that it was because the fourth wanted the village to see Naruto as a hero. Instead the parents of Naruto's generation grew to hate him. They blamed him for all the death and destruction caused by the Kyuubi and they warned their children to stay away from him. Desperate for attention, Naruto became a troublemaker. He is later seen in a flashback as one of the "failures", sneaking out of class with Shikamaru, Choji, and Kiba.

Prior to episode 1 While the Academy Final Exam seems to be more of a Rite of Passage than something meant to separate out the better potential ninja (he is the only one in his class who failed in episode 1), Naruto has taken the Exam and failed 3 times prior to episode 1. There is speculation that this is due to the seal interfering with Naruto's chakra, but it could be that Naruto simply isn't talented in addition to skipping class.

Naruto seems to be quite skilled at the Transformation Jutsu. (skilled enough to put his own spin on it) He is worst at Clone Jutsu.
