Introduction

The fourth episode of One Piece made it's premiere on the Japanese television station Fuji TV with the title Luffy's Past! The Red-Haired Shanks Appears!.

It opens with a brief introduction as all One Piece episodes do, with the voice of the narrator repeating the following:

Wealth, fame, power. The man who had obtained everything in this world, the Pirate King, Gold Roger. His final words that he said at his execution sent people to the seas. ‘My wealth and treasure? If you want it, I’ll let you have it. Look for it! I left in all in that place!’

Now men, chasing their dreams, sailed toward the Grand Line. The world now enters the Great Age of Pirates!

The first series opening them, “We Are” by Hiroshi Kitadani, then begins.

Summary

Part A

A Jolly Roger flies on a small boat, with a clown-like face. Three pirates come across another small boat containing the mysterious orange-haired girl. While the three pirates investigate her boat, she takes theirs, and leaves them in a rain storm she predicts just before it appears.

Monkey D. Luffy and Roronoa Zoro are still afloat in their small boat. Zoro tells Luffy that he never considered himself a "pirate hunter", and just did it to survive. Suddenly, Luffy's hat is blown away by the wind, and he utters the name "Shanks".

It flashbacks to Luffy as a boy in a bar with a bunch of pirates and a red-headed man wearing his straw hat named Shanks. Luffy says he wants to become a pirate, but it criticized for still being a child. A man breaks down the door to the bar, and insults the pirates within it. The men entering introduce themselves as bandits, and act hostility toward the pirates. The leader smashes Shanks's bottle of sake, and says that he has a bounty of 8 million beri on his head. After threatening the group, the bandits leave. The pirates laugh, but Luffy is upset at how they let the bandits mess with them. Angry with them, Luffy eats a fruit that the pirates had been carrying, and when Shanks tries to get it back, Luffy stretches out, and tells Luffy that he ate the Gomu Gomu no Mi, has become a rubber-man, and has lost his ability to swim.

The scene fowards a bit, and Luffy is seen tied up and being beaten by the bandits from earlier. Luffy appears to have been standing up for Shanks and his crew. The leader unsheathes his sword, but the Red Hair Pirates show up just in time.

Part B

Higuma the Bear stops at the sight of Shanks, and tells him to run before he gets hurt. The bandits put a gun to Shanks’s head, but the bandit with the gun is instantly shot dead by one of Shank’s crew. He says that he doesn’t mind having food and drink spilt on him, but that he won’t stand for his friends to be hurt. A member of Shanks’s crew stops all of the bandits with a gun without firing a shot, but Higuma uses a smoke bomb and disappears with Luffy. On a small raft he takes Luffy out to the sea, and tosses Luffy in. Unable to swim, Luffy begins flailing. A large monster, a Sea King, appears, and eats Higuma the Bear. It charges at Luffy, but Shanks gets in the way. Shanks stares the monster down, and it flees in fear of his gaze. Luffy holds Shanks and cries, as the screen shows Shanks had his left arm torn off at the shoulder by the Sea King.

Back in town, Shanks and his crew leave, and Luffy says that he will gather a cew that will be able to beat Shanks’s, and that he will get One Piece and become the Pirate King. Shankks give Luffy his straw hat, and leaves, telling Luffy to give it back to him when the next meet, when Luffy is a great pirate.

Back in the small boat with Zoro, Luffy looks at his hat and thanks Zoro for getting his hat back. They look up in the sky and see a bird which Luffy shoots himself up to get for Zoro to eat. As it turns out, the bird is huge, and it takes Luffy. Zoro chases Luffy down, and the three pirates from earlier get in his boat. They tell Zoro that they are taking over the boat. A moment later, they are rowing the boat for Zoro, beaten and bruised.

The pirates say that they work for a pirate named Buggy the Clown, who has the ability of a Devil’s Fruit.

In a town, the orange-haired girl is running from a group of pirates with a map she stole, afraid of getting shot with a cannon by their “boss”.

A pirate with a clown nose looks through a looking-glass and sees Luffy being carried by the bird and orders someone to shoot it down. He falls from the sky and lands between the pirates and the orange-haired girl.
