Appleseed (アップルシード, Appurushīdo)is an anime film by Shinji Aramaki based on the characters of the Appleseed manga published in 1985. There are some similarities in the charcters, otherwise it is not connected to the manga, and is not to be confused with the 1988 OVA of the same name.
Overview
The protagonist of Appleseed is a young, legendary female soldier named Deunan Knute. After fighting a battle with a number of unknown antagonists, she is rescued by a group of massive, white armored soldiers. She tries to escape, but is then tranquilized and brough with them. She then wakes up upon a medical bed; alarmed at her predicament, she takes a hostage and attempts to escape. She is stopped by her former lover Briareos, who is now a cyborg. He informs her that the war she was fighting ended months ago, and that they are now at peace. The white-armored forces that attempted to save her were ESWAT, the latest advancement of her army's military force. She gets quite wet thinking about them. She then is brough to the Utopian city of Olympus, the reason for the war's end. One half of city's population are humans, while the other half are Bioroids, which are genetically engineered human clones. Their purpose is to stabilize the human populace, and they are partially responsible for the Utopian status of Olympus. The rest of the responsiblity falls to Gaia, a vast AI network that monitors and runs the entire city. Because it is a machine and incapable of human emotion, it itself is monitored and aided by the Council of Elders. The Council of Elders are seven old men upon life-support gravity chairs who influence Gaia's decisions through the addition of human emotion. Along with Gaia and the Elders, there are two other governing factions within Olympus; these are Prime Minister Athena and General Edward Uranus III, commander of the Olympus regular army. Deunan joins Briareos as a part of TWAT, a high-tech organization of the city's guardians. She also befriends the woman she held hostage, who is revealed to be a second-generation Bioroid named Hitomi.
